Stargazing from India: A Season-by-Season Guide

In short

India's latitude is a genuine advantage — you can see most of the northern sky and a good deal of the southern. The obstacles are the monsoon and some of the worst light pollution on Earth. Here is how to work around both.

India spans roughly 8°N to 37°N, and that placement is better for stargazing than most people realise. From Chennai or Bengaluru at around 13°N, you can see essentially the entire northern sky and reach far enough south to catch objects that observers in London or New York will never see — the Southern Cross, Alpha Centauri, Canopus and the Large Magellanic Cloud among them.

The difficulties are different ones: the monsoon, and light pollution that ranks among the worst anywhere.

Working around the monsoon

The southwest monsoon dominates roughly June to September across most of the country, and the northeast monsoon brings rain to Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh from October into December.

For most of India, October to March is the observing season. Skies are clearest and most stable from November through February, when humidity drops and the atmosphere steadies. April and May are usable but often hazy, with dust and heat shimmer degrading the view.

There is a compensation worth knowing about: the days immediately after heavy monsoon rain can produce exceptionally clean air, with dust and aerosols washed out. If a break in the clouds coincides with the end of a downpour, it is worth going outside.

The high-altitude desert of Ladakh is the exception to all of this. It sits in a rain shadow, has minimal humidity, and offers some of the best observing conditions on the planet.

Light pollution, honestly

Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru have sky brightness that limits naked-eye visibility to a few dozen stars. The Milky Way is invisible from any of them.

The practical response is to travel, and around most Indian cities you do not have to go far. Two hours of driving usually reaches skies dramatically better than the city centre. Use a light pollution map to pick a direction, and prefer sites away from the main highway corridors.

Some accessible dark-sky areas:

  • Ladakh — Hanle in particular, home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory and India's first designated dark sky reserve. Among the finest observing sites anywhere in the world.
  • Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh — high altitude, very dry, excellent transparency
  • Rann of Kutch, Gujarat — flat, dry and remarkably dark
  • Coorg and the Western Ghats — reachable from Bengaluru, though humid
  • Thar Desert around Jaisalmer — dry, dark and easy to reach
  • Rural Tamil Nadu and Telangana — good skies within a few hours of the major southern cities

Winter: October to February

The best season, and the richest sky.

Orion dominates the eastern evening sky from December, and from India it rises high overhead rather than staying low — a considerably better view than northern Europe gets. The belt, the sword with the Orion Nebula hanging below it, orange Betelgeuse and blue-white Rigel are all easy naked-eye targets, and binoculars on the Nebula show real structure.

Follow the belt down-left to Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, blazing and scintillating violently. Follow it up-right to Aldebaran and the V of the Hyades, then onward to the Pleiades — a genuine binocular showpiece, and visible to the naked eye as a small misty patch under decent skies.

Canopus, the second-brightest star, is visible from all of India in winter and is an object northern Europe never sees at all.

From southern India in the early hours of late winter, Crux and Alpha Centauri begin appearing low in the south.

Spring: March to May

Warmer and hazier, but with the best access to the southern sky.

Leo rides high, with Regulus at the base of the Sickle. Follow the arc of the Big Dipper's handle to Arcturus, then on to Spica.

The major opportunity is the far south. From Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi in April and May, the Southern Cross and the Pointers — Alpha Centauri and Hadar — are visible low in the south. From Kanyakumari the view is better still. This is a genuine geographic advantage over northern-hemisphere observers, and it is worth planning a trip south for.

April and May also bring the Lyrid and Eta Aquariid meteor showers, the latter from debris left by Halley's Comet and favouring pre-dawn hours.

Monsoon: June to September

Mostly written off, but not entirely.

When breaks do appear, the Summer Triangle — Vega, Deneb and Altair — sits high overhead, with the Milky Way running through it. Scorpius, with red Antares at its heart, is well placed and rides much higher from Indian latitudes than from Europe. Sagittarius next to it points toward the galactic centre, and this is the densest, richest region of the Milky Way available to us.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks around 12–13 August. It is the year's most reliable shower elsewhere, but in India it usually falls squarely in monsoon cloud. Worth checking the forecast rather than assuming.

Autumn: late September to November

The transition into the good season, with clearing skies.

The Great Square of Pegasus is high, and from a dark site you can find the Andromeda Galaxy — at 2.5 million light-years, the most distant object visible to the unaided eye, appearing as a faint elongated smudge. From India it sits reasonably high, and binoculars make it straightforward.

Fomalhaut is low in the south, alone in an empty stretch of sky.

Diwali is the observational low point of the year, with fireworks and additional lighting degrading skies for several nights around it. Plan around the dates.

For any shower: go somewhere dark, lie back so you can take in a wide area of sky, and give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adapt. Do not use a telescope or binoculars — meteors can appear anywhere, and you want the widest possible field. Check the Moon phase, since a bright Moon ruins a shower as effectively as cloud.

Practical notes

Dew is a serious problem in most of India outside the dry northwest. Optics fog quickly. A dew shield helps; a cheap USB dew heater strip helps more.

Insects at rural sites in the warmer months are worse than most people plan for. Repellent and covered clothing.

Permissions and safety. Some good dark sites are near restricted areas or in forest reserves that close after dark. Check before setting out, and prefer going with others.

Timing. Astronomical twilight ends about 75 to 90 minutes after sunset at Indian latitudes — earlier than at higher latitudes, where summer twilight can last most of the night. This means genuinely dark skies arrive sooner in the evening than European guides suggest.

Local astronomy clubs exist in most major cities and frequently run public observing nights. Turning up to one is the fastest way to look through a decent telescope, learn the sky from people who know it, and find out where the good local sites are.
